Areas of the Bay of Plenty
Seaside Papamoa is full of diverse options for visitors. Located down the road from Te Puke, Papamoa’s long beach is a quieter option than the busier Mount Maunganui areas and there are many access spots along Papamoa Beach Road. Papamoa’s coast stretches out to the sky, bordered by wild, protected dunes and more remote beaches. Mauao can be seen in the distance through a haze of sea spray and endless white sand beach. Papamoa offers visitors an alternative destination to Mount Maunganui and Tauranga’s cosmopolitan buzz. The beaches are less crowded and there’s an atmosphere of laid-back relaxation. Unwind in Papamoa, buy your vegetables from the side of the road, visit the local market or make the most of restaurants by the sea and inland. There are several small shopping centres, recreation reserves, sports centres and nearby golf courses. Visit the Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Park, which has stunning views of the area and ancient Maori pa sites, or take in the nearby native bush walks and waterfalls.
Te Puke, the ‘kiwifruit capital of the world,’ is the heart of the country’s kiwifruit industry. Te Puke is surrounded by orchards and pack houses. The town hosts an annual kiwifruit festival to pay tribute to the kiwifruit industry and its role in the town. Te Puke is set in a prime location close to three surf beaches - Papamoa, Pukehina and Maketu - within a 10-minute drive of the town centre. There are many bushwalks and parks in the area such as the Roydon Downs Bush and Farm Walks. Te Puke also has a multitude of walking tracks, picnics, BBQs, camping sites and swimming holes to entertain the whole family. With a great variety of shops, cafes and industry, Te Puke is a fine example of a developing, bustling New Zealand town.
Maketu and Paengaroa
Maketu is an area steeped in history, while Paengaroa has a number of attractions to suit any traveller. Located about 40 minutes from Rotorua, Maketu was the landing place of Te Arawa canoe following the migration of early Maori from Hawaiki. A memorial on the foreshore commemorates the landing. Maketu is also a favourite place for swimming, boating and fishing, and during the winter locals gather whitebait. The privately-owned Newdicks beach is a rockier beach than most of the region’s beaches, and it’s a popular spot for horse-back riding. Further along State Highway 2 is Paengaroa, known as “The Junction.” The village has a large number of tourism attractions and accommodation all set in proximity to both beaches and kiwifruit orchards. The area has great cafés and activities that make the most of the local scenery.
The town of Katikati, located 20 kilometres to the south of Waihi Beach, is known as New Zealand’s ‘mural town’. The community is passionate about art, which is evident throughout the nearly 40 murals which adorn the walls of businesses throughout the town. Katikati is also well-known for its Haiku Pathway, which is a two kilometre walk along the Uretara River. The trail passes stones that have been carved with Haiku verse, all carefully selected by a local poet. Katikati is also a great base for walks in the nearby Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park. Katikati is built on the banks of the Uretara River and is fast becoming known for its summer evening concerts featuring jazz, classical and contemporary music. As well, Katikati offers a growing collection of other outdoor art. The town has plans to further this growth, with open air art, more murals, sculptures and festivals.
Waihi Beach is a popular holiday destination thanks to nine kilometres of sandy white beach and a quiet lifestyle. Waihi Beach is located at the western boundary of the region. From the northern end of Waihi Beach you can access the beautiful Orokawa Walkway. This eight kilometre walkway offers fantastic views and winds along the coastline to Orokawa Bay and further up to Homunga Bay, which are both secluded beaches that are great spots for a picnic. The township of Waihi Beach itself has a number of accommodation options. The main street in Waihi Beach includes cafés and takeaways suitable for a day at the beach. Nestled down the road from Waihi Beach is Athenree, a tranquil harbourside haven. Next stop is Bowentown, a popular spot for family picnics, fishing and swimming. Bowentown Domain, located on the headland at the northern entrance to Tauranga Harbour, offers a series of walks which take in culturally significant sites such as Maori pa that date back several hundred years.
Whakatane is an attractive coastal town situated on the banks of the Whakatane River. It has a vibrant retail and commercial area, which includes a diverse range of shops, cafes, restaurants and accommodation options. Whakatane is the main base for trips to Whakaari (White Island), one of the world’s accessible live matine volcanoes. White Island is an unforgettable experience. Located 49 kilometres off the shores of Whakatane, the island is accessible by boat or helicopter. One of the top walks around Whakatane is the Nga Tapuwae O Toi bush track, which includes pa sites of major historic significance, native forest, pohutukawa stands, coastal views, seabird colonies, forest birds in abundance, plantation forest and rural vistas. Ohope Beach, just six kilometres over the hill from Whakatane is a major draw card for holidaymakers, with 11 kilometres of golden sand and safe swimming waters.
We look forward to welcoming you to Rotorua and your car rental so you can explore the beautiful Bay of Plenty region!
